Responsible for planning, developing, and evaluating the Coordinated School Health Program to enhance healthcare service quality for students in the schools. Updates School Health Services (SHS) policies and procedures and ensures all services are provided in compliance with federal, state, tribal, and licensing standards and requirements. Provides guidance and direction to school nurses and SHS staff by teaching relevant regulations and procedures and assisting with developing individual healthcare plans. Assesses patient care information based on data abstracted from medical records and established outcome measures. Performs regular audits on a variety of SHS activities to identify deficiencies and plan appropriate quality improvement initiatives. Coordinates with other departments to facilitate interdepartmental performance improvement. Directly Supervises SHS Health Educators.


  • Supervises staff by educating relevant procedures and standards, developing staffing schedules for daily coverage of activities, monitoring performance, and providing mentoring and guidance as appropriate for school RN and school health education requirements.
  • Supervises assigned staff and provides feedback on performance standards for School Health Nursing and School Health Education.
  • Serves as a clinical role model, advocate, and resource to staff, patients, and families by sharing knowledge and skills to assist problem-solving and increase productivity and efficiency of processes.
  • Develops and updates SHS policies and standard operating procedures in accordance with all applicable federal, state, tribal, and licensing standards and guidelines and current best practices.
  • Provides age-appropriate nursing care to ill or injured students based on their conditions of sickness.
  • Performs annual teacher and school staff training in collaboration with school nurse and health educators as part of quality improvement initiatives.
  • Plans, oversees, and evaluates annual health screening and flu clinics at each school in conjunction with school nurses.
  • Develops clinical outcome measures and related tracking and monitoring systems to integrate organization-wide quality improvement systems and monitor effectiveness of services, risk management, patient safety indicators, and corrective actions.
  • Performs audits on immunization program, parent referrals, and infection control rounds on a regular basis and submits reports to relevant parties.
  • Guides and assists school nurses in patient care challenges, including managing individual health plans, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and 504 plans and coordinating with doctors regarding health plans. Covers school nurse office as needed.
  • Monitors inventory of controlled medications and performs quarterly medication rounds in each nurse office.
  • Ensures accuracy, timeliness, and compliance of data entered into assessment charts, electronic health record (EHR), and other analytics solutions.
  • Develops annual SHS surveys for school staff and patient families to evaluate service program on a regular basis.
  • Collects and maintains all incident reports regarding patient falls, medication errors, and other safety issues.
  • Assists in collecting and compiling monthly statistical measures and prepares operational and statistical reports for management.
  • Communicates potential disease exposure and other notifications to the schools in a timely manner.
  • Investigates and responds to staff and patient complaints to ensure appropriate resolution of concerns.
  • Participates in annual health fairs, school nurse association conference, vision and hearing checks, immunization clinics, and wellness screening programs as needed.
  • Works closely and collaboratively with other direct and ancillary patient care areas, including Safety and Security, Employee Health, Infection Control, Compliance, and Risk Management, and facilitates interdepartmental performance improvement activities as appropriate.
  • Performs other job-related activities as requested.


  • Graduate of an accredited Registered Nurse program from an accredited university or college; Bachelors Degree required.
  • Registered Nurse Licensure in Arizona in good standing or qualified Compact Licensure.
  • 3 years nursing experience required.
  • Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Clearance Card required.
  • Current and valid State of Arizona driver’s license.
  • 1 year quality management experience preferred.
  • Current and continuing BLS training and certifications within 30 days in position.
  • Current school nurse certification or ability to obtain within 1 year in position.
  • Demonstrates ability to relate to diverse cultures and specifically the Gila River Community and/or other Native American cultures and community health services.
